We know very little about the Brandenburgs.  In fact, we only know for sure about our great Grandmother.  Johanna Maria Fredricka Augusta Brandenburg was born in Germany April 29, 1858, and came to America with her family in the fall of 1864.  I have found one ship's manifest that matches her name in that time frame. The Teutonia came from Marsellies France in Oct of 1864 to the United States. It had a family of Brandenburgs on the ship.  Carl Johann  age 36, his wife Maria age 36, Christian age 15, Johanna age 6, Maria age 7, and Dorothea age 6 months.   There was also another family on this ship named Brandenburg:
Frederick Brandenburg age 49 and a younger boy named Johan age 7.  The family settled in Iowa.  Perhaps they settled in Clinton Iowa because they made an error in judgement when they came to the US.  They couldn't speak our language and so perhaps they were given wrong directions to relatives that were already here in Clinton County Ohio where there was a very large group of Brandenburgs.  We will never know this, but fate brought them to Clinton County Iowa instead.  Johanna married Anton Francis Kreucher, and had 11 children.  I don't know what happened to the rest of the family.  I have found Brandenburgs that were friends of Mathias Kreucher in Crawford County Iowa.  That family is Christian Brandenburg. Christian lived in Charter Oak Iowa and married Emiliegeborne Rettmann.   They had three children, Louis, Henry, and Wilhemina.   Mrs. Brandenburg (Johanna's mother)came to live with her daughter and family in 1879 or so, and died in their home in November of 1880.  She is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Clinton Iowa.  The folklore of our family is that Mr Brandenburg moved away, perhaps to DeWitt Iowa and remarried after the death of his wife, starting a new family.  There was a Carl Brandenburg there, and a son named Albert.  Johanna died in March of 1896 and is buried in St Boniface Cemetery.  The folklore about Maria the other daughter was that she may have married a constable or policeman named Hendricks, Hendrickson, or Henderson.  What happened to Dorothea?  Were there other children?  Why can't we find these Brandenburgs listed on any census information? Why wasn't the first name listed on death information?  Why didn't the Brandenburgs name appear on Johanna's marriage certificate?  Lots of questions, little answers in all the years we have been searching for them.   The Brandenburg family in the Crawford County and Sac County areas are as follows:   August Thiede, he was the second husband of Marie Brandenburg, August Henkel married to Louisa Brandenburg and I would like any information on Henry Stehr which appears to be Marie Brandenburgs first husband.  Louisa Johanna Brandenburg Henkel died in Minnesota, but not sure where and would like information on her.  Johan Brandenburg their brother lived in Lyons- need information on him and his family.  I would be very interested in any early pictures you have of these families.  Please do not forget to check out the pictures of Johanna Brandenburg Kreucher and her husband Anton and her parents to see if we have any matches with your family.  Someone must know of this family!
